Company History

BEI Hawaii has grown with Hawaii and the Pacific since 1890. On the island of Oahu, BEI Hawaii began as an importer of commercial fertilizer (Albatross Guano) from Laysan Island. This was the beginning of commercial production of sugar, coffee, and pineapple in Hawaii, which created an expanding market for new agricultural products and commercial fertilizer.

The company soon became the first to ship fertilizer directly to all the major islands in Hawaii. The demand for a greater range of products lead BEI Hawaii to rapidly expand operations to supply the agricultural industry. In 1927, a branch on the island of Hawaii was opened. The company extended operations to Maui in 1931 and Kauai in 1947. Soil deficiencies were also a major concern, leading to the development of the Laboratory Services Division in Papaikou on the island of Hawaii in 1932.

Building on BEI Hawaii’s expertise in the sugar and pineapple industry, BEI Hawaii took on new challenges in meeting the growing needs of diversified agriculture. Macadamia nuts, coffee, and various fruit and vegetable crops began to benefit from our custom blended fertilizers.

Also, our full line of fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, and other related products were used to help maintain Hawaii's newest diversifications, including exotic flowers, sod farms, and golf courses. Working with the golf course industry, BEI Hawaii began importing sand for both golf course construction and maintenance. Cinders, used in landscaping and construction, were also made available on all islands.

Starting in the 1960’s, BEI Hawaii has been the largest supplier of industrial chemicals to the state of Hawaii. BEI Hawaii currently offers a wide range of generic and specialty chemicals. Our industrial division personnel specialize in many of the State's industrial chemicals needs, and in providing a wide-range of expertise. Our principal areas of service include potable and wastewater treatment, food and industrial production, odor control, and industrial cleaners. Products range from acids and bases delivered in bulk cargo tankers all the way down to pint size containers for such products as disinfectants. As stewards of the products, we provide hands-on customer assistance, safety and environmental training, regulatory assistance, and expert technical support in the event of an emergency.

As one of Hawaii's largest suppliers of pest control products, BEI Hawaii provides the products and the expertise to meet the requirements of Hawaii's professional pest control operators. Our product line includes most major brands of fumigants, pesticides, growth regulators, baits and traps.
